SOPHIE WHIBLEY
Sophie’s start in classical singing training at the age of nine skyrocketed her performance career in more ways than she can imagine.
Having spent most of her teenage and adult life in Dunedin, Sophie completed her Bachelor of Performing Arts (Musical Theatre Voice) under the tutelage of Arlie McCormick at the University of Otago, while performing in local musical theatre productions alongside her study. Musical theatre highlights include “Hunyak” in Chicago, “Louisa” in The Sound of Music, “Dorothy” in The Wizard of Oz, “Blousey Brown” in Bugsy Malone, “Wednesday Addams” in The Addams Family and “Francine Valli” in Jersey Boys. Sophie also began her movement journey as an artistic gymnast at the age of 4, and has trained in tap dancing under Denise Henderson, gaining Grades 3-7 with Distinction in American Tap through the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance.
During her childhood and teenage years, Sophie gained Grades 1 to 7 with Distinction in Classical Singing, Classical Piano and Music Theory through Trinity College London, and was the recipient of the bronze medal for the highest examination grade in Otago for Classical Singing from Grades 3-5. Sophie credits her success in the performing arts to the unwavering support of close friends and family, who continue to inspire and motivate her to this day.
During the day, Sophie is a secondary school teacher in the heart of Dunedin, aiming to inspire the next generation of Aotearoa’s performing artists. She is absolutely thrilled to be performing alongside some of Dunedin’s finest lads and ladies!
